Here, we will outline some important camping essentials to know, camping basics, tips, things to bring, and the best times for camping. 

Overall, the best time to go camping is in the Winter and the Spring. You will be able to avoid the crowds and the blazing hot weather.

Plan Ahead

  • Always plan ahead and check the weather, location, travel time, and equipment you will have to bring before 

    • Make a checklist​

    • Plan at least 1 week ahead 

  • Always bring appropriate clothing for unexpected weather conditions

Shelter

  • Finding shelter or bringing shelter is one of the most important things.

  • It is good to have a shelter that is resilient to:

    •  rain, snow and also sunlight

  • Bring a tent! A tent is a better choice than expecting to find shelter in nature.

Water and Ultilites

  • Camping can be tiring and to avoid being exhausted or dehydrated, bring plenty of food and water

    • do not pack food that will spoil easily, pack easily cookable foods​

  • Dress for utility, not to impress

Things to Bring:

  • Tent (and footprint, stakes)

  • Sleeping bags

  • Sleeping pads

  • Camping pillow

  • Headlamps or flashlights (and extra batteries)

  • Camp chairs

  • Camp table (if no picnic table)

  • Lantern (and mantles and fuel/batteries if needed)

Additional Things

  • Sunshade, tarp, or screen house

  • Cots

  • Sleeping bag liners

  • Firewood sourced near campsite

  • Camp rug

  • Tablecloth and clips (or tape)

  • Clothesline with clips

Clothing & Footwear

  • Moisture-wicking underwear

  • Moisture-wicking T-shirts

  • Quick-drying pants/shorts

  • Long-sleeve shirts (for sun, bugs)

  • Lightweight fleece or jacket

  • Boots or shoes suited to terrain

  • Socks (synthetic or wool)

  • Sleepwear
